Things you can do to help reduce marine debris

  • Reduce
    • Limit your use of plastics when possible
    •  Make choices when you shop
    • Buy items in bulk to minimize packaging
    • Choose packaging that degrades more easily than plastic
  • Reuse
    • Items like ziplock bags can be washed and used multiple times
    • Use a reusable bag when you go shopping rather than plastic bags
  • Recycle
  • Make sure that you dispose of trash properly
    • Take trash with you when you leave the beach
    • Ensure that trash bins are securely closed and that all trash is kept in closed bags
    • Make sure trash cannot fly off boats
    • Remember that it is illegal to dispose of any plastic in all U.S. waters and anywhere at sea
  • Pick up any debris you see while out
  • Keep streets, sidewalks, parking lots and storm drains free of trash – they can empty into our oceans and waterways
  • Learn more about marine debris
  • Serve as an example to others
  • Get involved in cleanups in your area
  •  Support legislation and other measures that help stem the marine debris problem
